For cantilever balconies, deflection is usually the governing factor. Use a span-to-depth ratio of 7 or less to control deflection. For example, a 2 m cantilever should have at least 280–300 mm slab depth (with drop or beams if needed). Always provide top reinforcement continuous into the main slab, and check code deflection limits (L/250 in ACI/IS; L/180 in Eurocode).
